During the first five months of 2026, the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) recorded a continued increase in IP filing activities. Total applications for invention patents, design patents, petty patents and trademarks increased compared with the corresponding period in 2025, reflecting sustained innovation and growing commercial activities in Thailand.
1. Invention Patent Applications
During the first five months of 2026, a total of 3,662 invention patent applications were filed with the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP), representing an 8.72% year-on-year increase compared with the corresponding period in 2025. Foreign applicants continued to account for the majority of filings, representing approximately 86% of all invention patent applications. The top filing countries were Japan, the United States, China, Germany, and South Korea, reflecting continued strong interest from overseas applicants in protecting their innovations in Thailand. In terms of technology fields, Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare Products ranked first, indicating strong innovation in the life sciences and healthcare sectors.
2. Petty Patent Applications
During the first five months of 2026, a total of 2,244 petty patent applications were filed with the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP), representing a 16.69% year-on-year increase compared with the corresponding period in 2025.
3. Industrial Designs Applications
During the first five months of 2026, a total of 2,614 industrial design applications were filed with the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP), representing a 13.31% year-on-year increase compared with the corresponding period in 2025. The top filing foreign countries were China, the United States, Japan, Switzerland, and Germany, demonstrating continued interest from overseas applicants in protecting their product designs in Thailand.
4. Trademark Applications
During the first five months of 2026, a total of 23,397 trademark applications were filed with the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP), representing a 7.64% year-on-year increase compared with the corresponding period in 2025. The top filing foreign countries were China, the United States, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, reflecting continued interest among foreign businesses in securing trademark protection in Thailand.
5. Significant Growth in IP Grants and Registrations
Another notable development is the substantial increase in the number of intellectual property rights granted or registered in Thailand. During the first five months of 2026, all four categories recorded year-on-year growth compared with the corresponding period in 2025.
A total of 2,406 invention patents were granted, representing an increase of 18.99%. The number of petty patents granted rose significantly to 1,152, an increase of 49.03%, while 2,978 industrial design patents were granted, marking an increase of 48.53%. Trademark registrations also increased, with 18,040 marks registered during the period, representing year-on-year growth of 4.22%.
These figures suggest that the Department of Intellectual Property of Tha has continued to improve and expedite its examination and registration processes. This progress enables the Department to respond more effectively to Thailand’s expanding business activities and the growing demand for intellectual property protection, particularly in innovation-driven sectors.
