The Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) of Thailand has announced an important procedural update affecting all international trademark applications designating Thailand under the Madrid Protocol.
Starting 15 August 2025, the Thai Trademark Office will issue all trademark registration certificates exclusively in electronic format for applications filed through the Madrid route. This marks another step in Thailand’s ongoing transition toward digitalized IP administration, aligning with WIPO’s global move toward paperless communication and document exchange.
Under the new system, once protection is granted in Thailand, the Trademark Office will transmit the electronic certificate directly to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). WIPO will then notify the applicant or representative of the statement of grant of protection, completing the registration process. No paper certificate will be issued in these cases.
For applications granted before 15 August 2025, the existing procedure will remain in effect. Certificates will continue to be issued in paper form as follows:
If a Thai local agent has been appointed, the Trademark Office will send the paper certificate directly to the agent.
If no Thai agent has been appointed, the certificate will be retained at the Thai Trademark Office.
Applicants who wish to obtain the physical (paper) certificate may still request retrieval through their appointed local representative. SOPLaw can assist in coordinating with the Trademark Office to ensure secure collection and delivery.
This procedural change reflects Thailand’s commitment to modernization and efficiency in IP administration. It also aligns with WIPO’s broader initiative to standardize electronic communication between national IP offices and international applicants.
